"In a word, these players are fantastic, and they seem to have a real affinity for the music of Bloch. We’re long overdue for new recordings of the composer’s five numbered string quartets. Perhaps Sony could entice the Galatea Quartet into the studio to record them. This is a superb sampling of Bloch’s music for string quartet in superior performances and a stunning recording. A must-buy recommendation." --FANFARE: Jerry Dubins
Highly original repertoire by the Swiss-born American composer Ernst Bloch. His works for string quartet have partly a quite modern ironic approach or a very emotional, post romantic attitude. One of the most famous Bloch pieces, “Prayer”, is presented on this CD in a very striking version for solo cello and string quartet. This CD features also as a WORLD PREMIERE RECORDING an early string quartet from 1896. The recording was made using the original hand-written manuscript that is owned by the Bloch heirs.
The Galatea Quartet, founded in Zurich in 2005, is one of the leading young string quartets in Europe. Well received by both the press and the public, their pleasure in playing together is balanced with meeting the highest technical demands of ensemble playing. This standard ensured their success in competitions in Geneva, at the Migros Chamber Music Competition, in Osaka, and 2010 the Rimbotti prize as well as the 'Prix du Ministère de la Culture' at the Bordeaux Competition.
The quartet name "Galatea" has been inspired by Greek mythology. Pygmalion, the sculptor, carved an ivory statue of Galatea and fell in love with his creation. He was rescued from his desperate plight by Aphrodite, who brought Life to Galatea.
