Nigel Kennedy with pianist Peter Pettinger play Elgar’s Violin Sonata and a collection of Elgar Miniatures.
Nigel Kennedy, when he still had two names. After the success of his multi award winning disc of the Elgar Violin Concerto, the artist now known as ‘Kennedy’ turned his hand to these smaller scale Elgar works. Recorded in 1984, this is a recording of a great artist at the peak of his powers.
Some of these pieces will be better known to many in their orchestral versions, but in this more basic arrangement they sound just right. The achingly beautiful Sospiri has never sounded better, and the Chansons and Salut d’Amour (here played as trio) sound as fresh as ever. The Violin Sonata will be a revelation to many people. In its more intimate way (though still very much an Elgarian way) it is as great as the Violin Concerto. Nigel Kennedy and Peter Pettinger play it, and everything else on this disc, to perfection.
